Program Notes
While Joseph Nichols is known for his stellar music production and immaculate bass lines, some might now know that he is also an exceptional poet and composer. His most famous quote is “all ideas start with one note,” a concept that he applies to his own compositions as well as his educational philosophy when educating the next generation of musicians and producers. This aspect is best exemplified in his composition, aptly named One Note, which received its debut on instagram in the form of multitrack video that Joseph released in May 2022. A month or so later, in preparation for this first live performance of the Sages of Future Soul (SoFS), fellow SoFS co-founder, trombonist and writer Shawn W. Davern arranged One Note for extended jazz ensemble instrumentation. The arrangement of One Note has since become a staple of the SoFS repertoire and the piece now serves at the group’s introduction to their concert sets.
