Program Notes
One Bright Star for wind band was originally composed as a choral piece by my high school choral director Anthony J. Alvaro. The choral work was premiered on my high school’s annual “Kaleidoscope” concert in May 2010, and received a subsequent performance at the New York State School Music Association’s (NYSSMA) Winter Conference in December 2010. The piece draws its text from a poem of the same name by Linda Ori, a published poet with numerous awards and honors to her credit. One Bright Star was arranged for the James Madison University Symphonic Band in 2018, and the piece received its premiere under my direction on April 4th, 2018. The wind band setting is dedicated to my teacher, known affectionately to his students as “Mr. A,” for his unyielding commitment to inspiring and supporting his students and their love of music. – Shawn Davern, 2018
