Program Notes
Molasses marks one of Hiatus Kaiyote’s most rhythmically innovative and brilliantly constructed songs in their catalog. The gorgeously layered nature of the song transfers successfully to the big band format, with the song being arranged in the summer of 2019. Molasses is the seventeenth track on Hiatus Kaiyote’s 2015 album Choose Your Weapon and is the fourth official release for the virtual big band The Sages of Future Soul. The arrangement features the solo flugelhorn, along with the flute and clarinet parts of the jazz ensemble. The oscillating grooves and angelic “Hiatus Kaiyote” harmonies set for the big band format adds a new dimension to the jazz ensemble canon that hopefully all directors and players can enjoy in performance!
