Program Notes

It is funny to think one of most well known Christmas songs ever was written during a heatwave in sweltering Los Angeles, but alas, that is the charm of the holiday classic Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Composed by Jule Styne with lyrics provided by Sammy Cahn, the song was first recorded by singer Vaughn Monroe and the released rendition went on to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100’s “Best Sellers” music chart for five straight weeks. Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! would receive various cover treatments since its conception, with one of its finest arrangements coming from the American rock band Chicago in 1998 on their Christmas album entitled Chicago XXV. The inspiration from Chicago’s cover, as well as the general love for the original song itself brought forth a new rendition for brass quintet and drum set, primarily featuring the french horn with some optional vocals mixed into the part. The brass quintet version features space for improvised solos towards the end of chart and it this arranger’s hope that all lovers of Christmas, brass and the band Chicago enjoy Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! for brass quintet and drum set.
Chicago ft. Lee Loughnane (vocals), (1998/2023)
